GROWTH HACK – What is Your Vision?…

“Once you know your why…you will know your way”

Michael Hyatt

As we set you on your way to a life of success and fulfilment, another one of our first #GrowthHacks (available in the Semester Student Planner) is to ‘find your why.’

The term has been popularised by Simon Sinek who is a very influential author and inspirational speaker who has written several fantastic books such as ‘Start with Why’ OR ‘Find your why.’ (Check them out as they will be a great learning curve for you).

He applies it to business and explains that we should be aiming to have a higher purpose in our endeavours than simply looking to make money. He claims that if you can ‘find your why’ anything is achievable, and life feels more fulfilling. Look at the founders of Semester…our mission is to change the education system so that there is a much greater focus on student wellbeing and personal development. All whilst creating a brand that builds a community for students to thrive from. Longer term we hope that this can become the largest student support brand with a range of different products and services that help to provide students with all the tools they need to find their why and get the most from their studies, personally and academically.

For other people though… going to work, or creating a business, may
simply be about making as much money as possible (extrinsic motivation). The point being that everybody’s why is different.

A big part of ‘your why’ will be what you value the most. Again, as part of our planner we look to give you advice surrounding recognising what you value. However, when considering this blog post and the concept of finding your why, take a moment to think about what it is that you value most. Perhaps jot this down.

When considering your ‘why’ it ultimately comes down to personal
preference, but your ‘why’ is said to be the internal engine inside that says this is why I’m doing what I am doing and why it is rewarding to me (intrinsic motivation).

The reason the founders work on their personal development is because it positively serves them. Why are you working on yours? Why are you currently embarking on your study journey? Why is this so important to you?

Answer these questions honestly and you will soon understand the true reasons for why you are pursuing the path that you are on or you may even discover an additional or separate path that you want to take in order to find your true why.

You can apply this concept to any area of your life. This can be in work, study, or business but also in your hobbies or health pursuits.

Ask yourself the following:

– What is most important to you in life? Why is it important?

– What is your definition of success? Why is it that?

– What does your perfect day look like? Why is that?

There is also a concept by Dean Graziozi known as “seven levels deep” and in this he suggests looking at whatever your goal is and asking why this is so important. For each answer you give, ask yourself why again, until you have asked this question seven times, which you can believe will give you some further clarity.

Hopefully by viewing you’re why and understanding it, it will give you some insight. There are so many questions you can ask yourself to try and discover this. Do some research.

If you are currently working on a project and finding yourself becoming disengaged, then use your ‘why’ as a reminder to motivate you. This will start to bring you to focusing on your intrinsic motivations much more than extrinsic motivations such as money, a promotion, a certain grade or any other “reward”. There are many studies now that have proven that extrinsic motivating factors only provide us a very short an temporary level of happiness. As soon as you instead focus on the intrinsic motivations and “the process” the difference in happiness among participants of the studies is profound.

If you are doing well already but you know there is room for growth, reflect on your why and use it to push you even further forward? If you truly can’t find your why and you feel unfulfilled, perhaps you’re doing the wrong thing and it’s time to search out alternative answers.

I hope this helps and if you want any advice or guidance on discovering your why, reach out to us at Semester and we would be happy to help. Additionally, sign up to our subscription service where we will be provide free downloads to help you find your why and reach a life of success and fulfilment in your studies.
